Top 10 New Features of 2007

Source: cars.com

Although flying cars aren’t yet a reality, automakers are continually developing new technologies to make our cars safer and more futuristic. Here are some of our favorite automotive features from 2007 that edge us ever-closer to a car George Jetson would be proud of. Features from a number of cars made our list, but the 2008 Infiniti EX35 received the most mentions, including the top spot with our favorite new feature, Lane Departure Prevention.

Best New Feature: Lane Departure Prevention

Where you can find it: Infiniti EX35

Infiniti’s Lane Departure Prevention builds on conventional lane-departure warning systems, which detect lane markings and sound a chime if you drift astray. LDP goes one step further by gently applying the brakes to certain wheels to nudge you back on course. Sound too intrusive? We tried it out in the EX35 and it keeps a remarkably low profile. Hit the turn signal or steer the wheel slightly, and the system deactivates. On straight roads, it intervenes with just a hint of deceleration, and the dashboard chime alerts you of its actions. For its effectiveness and low profile, LDP is the winner.

Scratch Shield Paint

Where you can find it: Infiniti EX35

The crusade for city-friendly transportation began years ago with plastic bumpers and dent-resistant doors. It reaches new heights with Infiniti’s Scratch Shield paint. On the EX35, Scratch Shield combines a highly elastic resin with the clearcoat finish. The resulting surface is said to maintain a glossy appearance over the years, and it can actually undo minor damage in the course of a few days. While Scratch Shield won’t repair dents or gashes, Infiniti says it can restore things like fingernail scratches under the door handles. We haven’t had a chance to see it in action, but we’re intrigued by the prospects.

Nissan to equip future vehicles with MPG gauge

Nissan

We’ve found that cars with gas mileage monitors give us two games to play: Figuring out the best mileage we can squeeze out of the car, and figuring out the worst mileage we can get. While the latter is more fun, Nissan is hoping you’ll play the gas-saving game with its announcement today that all future models will include a fuel-efficiency gauge as standard equipment.

The gauge will display instant, as well as average, mileage readings to give drivers an idea of how their driving habits affect their gas mileage. Nissan reports the gauge could lead to driving improvements such as smoother acceleration and braking, increasing mileage by as much as 10 percent. Of course, that assumes that drivers will pay enough attention to the gauge, and to their own driving habits.

The gauge will find its way into current models scheduled for minor production freshenings, including the Nissan Altima and Infiniti G35, the automaker said.

To use M or to not use M?

BMW M3 badge

To use M or to not use M?

Will your new BMW M3 be called a BMW 360i? Or will Infiniti have to find a new letter for the M35 and M45? Hm, well, not really.

Ill take the letter “M” Pat for one million dollars!

Infiniti M45 Badge

The Federal Court of Appeal in Canada has ruled that Nissan is free to use the letter “M” when promoting its Infiniti M35 and M45 product range, in a two-year court case where BMW Canada has accused Nissan Canada Inc. of trademark infringement. Earlier this year BMW won an injuction that would prevent Nissan from using the “M” letter, but this was overturned on appeal on July 12.

When Infiniti originally unveiled the “M35″ and “M45″ models BMW expressed no objection. Only when Nissan Canada launched an advertising campaign announcing “the M is coming” did BMW executives raise some eyebrows and decided to take legal action.

BMW will now have to either petition the Supreme Court to hear the case or alternatively come to an agreement with Nissan, BMW spokesman Jochen Frey said on August 7.

2007 Infiniti G37 - Breaking the cover

2007 Infiniti G37? Yes, that is correct, no typo here. If you are trying to guess, more liters, then you guessed right. We shall see how long this one will last! A new re-designed touch screen navigation system will be optional as well. Shall we see something like this from Toyota.
