On The Cutting Edge of Performance and Luxury

The all-new 2009 Infiniti FX50 stands at the top of the performance luxury sport utility segment. I can say that because after my first drive, I was so impressed with the added power, handling, the luxurious appointments, high-tech gear, and the multitude of safety systems that also includes more sensors than you can shake a stick at. My only disappointment was that there is no power liftgate available. No big deal but it could come in handy when you are carrying cargo to the rear with both arms.

None the less, the new FX50 continues with head-turning styling and sporty proportions that enabled the first generation FX45 to stand out from all other performance luxury crossovers on the market with its long hood, stretched wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, and a low stance.

The aggressive styling serves notice of its performance capability, yet FX50 also offers room for five and the cargo capacity to hold four full-size golf bags.

New distinctive, chrome side air vents have been added behind the front fenders and are functional, allowing air to flow through the engine compartment and out the side of the vehicle, reducing front end lift by a full 5%, thus improving high-speed stability.

The front fascia retains the FX’s lustrous Infiniti signature double-arch front grille, fog lamps, and Adaptive High Intensity Discharge bi-xenon projector headlamps. The wheelbase has been stretched 1.4in. with the front wheels moved forward and out-providing a more pronounced performance stance.

The aggressive silhouette is once again highlighted by a strong front-to-rear shoulder line, a tight greenhouse with a wraparound chrome strip, kicked-back roofline and integrated rear spoiler. The large LED taillights extend beyond the body, helping create aerodynamic downforce, while big dual exhaust outlets with chrome tips cap the action-ready appearance.

The vehicle’s unique sporty styling works for me with its sexy, curvy lines, lowered stance, and big, 21in. wheels and tires stuffing the flared, rounded fenders. Black molding wraps around each wheelwell to further the aggressive look.

The only straight line is at the bottom of the doors that now feature a tasteful chrome strip. Deep side extensions below give it a lower the center of gravity, enhancing stability even more.

Under the FX’s polished, assertive styling is an equally advanced body structure. It uses the rigid platform architecture from the performance-oriented Infiniti G sedan, G coupe and M sedans. The FM (front-midship) flatform offers a performance foundation and balanced front-to-rear weight distribution for exceptional handling.

Efforts were taken to reduce weight and enhance body strength, including the use of new aluminum outer door panels. The overall FX body structure weighs nearly 200lbs. less than the previous FX, but the overall vehicle weight is increased due to additional equipment.

The new FX comes standard with the industry’s first use of Infiniti’s Advanced Scratch Shield paint which is a special ‘self-healing’ clearcoat paint that repairs fine scratches, such as fingernail scratches under door handles. Over a period of several days, using sunlight to heat the clearcoat, causes the small scratches to fill in.

Open the wide-opening doors, easily step over the stainless steel Infiniti kick plate, and you’ll discover a driver-oriented cockpit design that is sporty, comfortable, ergonomic, and luxurious with several breakthrough innovations.

The command center-style cockpit is designed to enhance your driving experience. The optional quilted leather-appointed 10-way power-adjustable sports driver’s seat includes variable air-inflating side bolster and lumbar support, and available thigh extensions. The front passenger seat offers 8-way power adjustments, and both seats are available with a new, quieter, more efficient heating and cooling functions for maximum comfort in any season.

The attention to detail and materials such as the real, hand-cut and rubbed wood, premium leather, aluminum, chrome, and quality soft-to-the-touch materials are designed beautifully around the Infiniti signature double-wave instrument panel, door trim, and easy to see white/violet Fin Vision electroluminescent gauges.

Optional is a new Automatic Driving Position system, which moves the seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors adaptively into the correct position-allowing you to change seat position while driving and keep the same mirror viewpoint and relationship between the steering column and your shoulder position.

The incredible FX50 interior comes standard with an array of comfort and convenience equipment, including a sporty, tilt/telescoping 3-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel for the perfect reach and angle, leather-wrapped shift knob, front door pockets, front seatback pockets, dual front and rear cupholders, locking glove box, center console with soft leather armrest, four assist grips, overhead sunglass holder, four 12-volt power plugs, power windows with front/rear one-touch up/down on FX50, dual map lamps, thick-cut pile carpeting with signature Infiniti front/rear/cargo floor mats, Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Start/Stop ignition, power door locks, sporty aluminum pedals, auto-diming rearview mirror, power-remote/heated side mirrors, cruise-control with steering wheel controls, front/rear intermittent wipers/washers and a special Welcome Lighting system with 12-point sequential lighting that starts by turning on the puddle lights under the side mirrors as you approach the vehicle, and continues to light key areas as you and your passengers settle into the interior. All buttons, dials and switches are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safer nighttime driving.

Another new option is an Advanced Climate Control System with Plasmacluster ionizer that removes or neutralizes interior airborne contaminants. The system includes a ‘clean mode’ which emits a low concentration of negative and positive ions that attach to airborne particles (mold, fungi, spores, etc.); causing an attraction to interior surfaces so they are no longer floating around, while rendering them harmless.

An ‘ion mode’ creates a high concentration of negative ions to impart a freshness and crispness to the air, similar to what people say they experience after a thunderstorm or near a waterfall.

In addition, the FX50 utilizes a new filter using fibers impregnated with natural grape seed polyphenol, which has the ability to neutralize allergens that conventional filters cannot remove due to their incredibly small size (0.3 to 0.5 microns).

The new FX comes equipped with state-of-the-art audio-an advanced Bose audio system, acoustically engineered by Bose to optimize sound within the FX’s interior. The 11-speaker system features an AM-FM-6CD player, an advanced Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter (DAC) system, XM satellite radio, diversity antenna and steering wheel-mounted remote buttons.

The optional Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System features XM NavTraffic with real time traffic information and a 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive for digital music storage and playback. The Interface System works with an iPod, the compact flash card slot, and Voice Recognition system for climate control, navigation, audio system and phone functions.

Other high-tech features inside include RearView Monitor and an optional Infiniti DVD Mobile Entertainment System with a 9in. flip-down console-mounted rear monitor, two wireless headphones and remote controller. Both the front and rear screens can display DVD content (front only when parked), a good idea.

I was blown away by the new interior design, sportiness, luxury, convenience and high-tech creature comfort and fun-to-use features. The FX50’s fully loaded interior really gives me the feeling of being more connected to the vehicle. Once acquainted with all of the controls and features, it just further moves the FX50 on up the ladder to the top of the luxury class sport utilities.

Firmly placing the all-new 2009 FX50 atop the segment is the exhilarating power and responsive, high-performance handling that I experienced once I put my foot down hard on the throttle.

The FX50 features a new 5.0 liter DOHC 32-valve, all-aluminum V8 engine rated at 390hp and 369lb.ft. of torque. The engine also features a high rev limit, a powerful, throaty engine sound from the specially tuned dual exhaust system, and improved fuel economy verses the previous 4.5 liter V8 engine. One of the keys to the new V8’s impressive performance is the adoption of Infiniti’s patented Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL) valve control technology, which was first introduced on the high-performance 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe.

The VVEL system continuously adjusts valve event and lift amounts, enabling higher fuel efficiency with higher torque and improved emissions over conventional VV designs. The VVEL intake camshafts, which feature continuously variable lift control teamed with a continuously variable valve timing control system (CVTCS), allow for a 6,800rpm redline and a high compression ratio of 10.9:1.

For those economical-minded consumers, the FX35 comes with a 3.5 liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine that is rated at 303hp at 6,800rpm and 262lb.ft. of torque.

Only one transmission is offered on the new FX-an all-new 7-speed automatic transmission, the first ever offered on an Infiniti vehicle. This new transmission offers both a wide ratio of coverage and a wide lock-up area, as well as a manual shift mode, downshift rev matching and adaptive shift control (ASC).

The standard ASC system adapts the transmission’s shift time, depending on your driving style, ensuring more responsive performance. ASC can switch between several different programs –adjusting gear hold and downshifting, helping the FX feel more like a manual shift transmission when you want. The standard solid magnesium paddle shifters on the FX50 enable you to shift the transmission without releasing you hands from the wheel which helps you maintain stability when accelerating or decelerating or when cornering at high speeds.

FX50 AWD and FX35 AWD models are equipped with Infiniti’s advanced ATTESAE-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system, which uses an advanced torque split control strategy that automatically transfers optimum torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions. The system provides outstanding torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions. The system provides outstanding handling due to optimum torque distribution from the front to rear (50:50 up to 0:100). ATTESA E-TS also provides high starting traction performance and smooth, stable acceleration, especially in snow-covered or off-road situations with a 50:50 torque split at standing start.

Allowing you to maintain a rock solid ride at speed straight-ahead, when challenging curving back roads, and getting around slow moving city traffic is the fully independent suspension with a new double-wishbone design up front. This new front setup offers better ride and improved handling reflexes.

The rear setup utilizes the multi-link design from the last FX45, but is refined to weigh less and provide more wheel travel-again for improved ride and handling. Large diameter stabilizer bars front and rear keep body lean to a bare minimum improving handling performance. The suspension system also incorporates special ‘dual flow path’ shock absorber technology with rebound springs for a responsive, yet comfortable ride. and firm, tight reactions to your inputs.

A new optional Continuous Damping Control (CDC) suspension system offers special electronically controlled shock absorbers. Using input from a variety of sensors, the system continuously alters the damping of the shocks to provide optimal ride and handling response. A selectable switch on the center console has two settings, ‘Auto’ and ‘Sport’, allowing you to control the shock valving levels depending on how you want the vehicle to react to your inputs at the time.

The FX50 is available with an advanced Rear-Active Steer system-the first of its kind for a SUV, which uses precise, electronic motor-driven control to turn the rear wheels up to one-degree, helping generate a nimble steering response at low speeds, and enhance stability at high speeds, especially on curving roads. The result is a vehicle that is able to change direction with improved quickness, precision and stability.

The FX50 comes standard with huge, 21X9.5in., lightweight, six-spoke aluminum alloy wheels developed by Enkei, and were created using a special type of ultra-lightweight casting and are as light as many smaller 18X8in. alloy wheels. These deluxe wheels are wrapped with 265/45R21in. all-season tires or W-rated high-performance summer tires.

These giant tires improve traction and stability, while improving the already compliant ride over poorly paved roads.

When you want to let your search for thrills take over you can always shut down the Infiniti advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system with Traction Control by pushing on the VDC button on the lower dashboard to your left, canceling out the computer controlled vehicle intervention that uses the throttle and brakes to prevent oversteer and understeer in certain situations. The ride is like they say,’ riding on rails’.
Powerful and secure braking performance is provided by the FX50’s 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with Brake Assist, ABS, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution enhancements. The FX50 system includes 4-piston front/2-piston rear (opposed piston) calipers clamping down on large 14in. rotors. The brakes are very strong and when I pushed on the pedal the feel was very linear and precise.

Infiniti engineers and designers pretty much covered everything about what an up-to-date, luxury and performance-driven sport utility should include, and I now want to mention the breakthrough, advanced automotive safety warning technologies and systems.

The intelligent brake assist system (IBA) uses the laser rangefinder from the Intelligent Cruise Control’s (ICC) system and analyzes closing speeds to an obstacle ahead to prevent or reduce damage caused by a rear-end collision.

Also available is a Distance Control Assist (DCA) system. Designed for low-speed, heavy traffic situations. DCA uses the Intelligent Cruise Control sensors to measure distance to the car a head. The DCA allows one-foot driving in heavy traffic-you depress the throttle to move forward, but when the car ahead slows, DCA ‘pushed back’ on the throttle, and automatically applies the brakes, even to a stop. You then depress the throttle to get moving again.

The available Intelligent Cruise Control (full speed range) system combines the brakes, throttle sensor and laser rangefinder with the cruise control system to automatically maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle in front.

Also available is the advanced Infiniti Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system, which takes Infiniti’s existing LDP one step further. LDP utilizes the FX’s Vehicle Dynamic Control System to apply slight brake pressure to the wheels opposite the side of the lane departure direction to help prevent the vehicle from inadvertently traveling out of its intended lane. If no action is taken by the driver, alarm bells will sound.

The breakthrough, optional, ‘Around View Monitor System’ is fantastic, and utilizes four small superwide-angle cameras-mounted on the front, side and rear of the FX-to project an all-around view of potential objects on every side of the vehicle, helping reduce blind spots when parking. The system uses advanced image processing to provide a unique one-of-a-kind ‘birds-eye-view’ of the vehicle, making it easy for you to position the FX for parallel parking by simultaneously confirming the exact placement of the front and rear of the vehicle. I love the system, it even showed the red paint on the curb as I backed as close to its beginning as I wanted to. It really gives you an overhead view.

When you put the transmission into reverse the 8in. screen is split between a TV image showing what is behind the vehicle, and the Around View.

Standard safety equipment includes 3-point front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, and three, three point seat belts in the standard 40/60 split back seats, dual-stage front supplemental airbags with passenger seat occupant classification system and seat belt sensor, roof-mounted side-impact and rollover curtain airbags for enhanced outboard seat occupant head protection, active head restraints, tire pressure monitoring system and LATCH child seat anchors.

FX also has an optional Pre-Crash seat belts that automatically cinches-up the FX’s seat belts if the system detects emergency braking, skidding movements or an emergency handling situation-based on information from the brake pedal stepping speed and stroke.

I don’t know what I have left out but the all-new 2009 Infiniti FX50 is phenomenal, easily ahead of the rest in the growing luxury sport utility segment with the spirit of a high-performing luxury sport sedan that can’t be beat!

The all-new 2008 Infiniti EX35 is the first crossover sport utility to combine sculpted sexy styling, a 300hp V6 engine, and elegant interior offering comfort and luxury, plus new, innovative technologies to make it stand alone in the emerging midsize luxury crossover segment.

The EX35’s sculpted elegance expresses a timeless appeal-sleek lines that portray speed, and finesse. Its layout combines the look and feel of a luxury coupe with a sport utility’s flexibility. Its sporty proportions include a long hood, short front and rear overhangs, rearward cabin and smooth coupe-like roofline arching over the windows to the C-pillars.

Its ‘right-sized’ packaging gives it excellent around town maneuverability, while the wide rear hatch and low load floor make it a versatile performer for everyday and weekend use.

The EX35’s exterior includes many signature Infiniti touches, including a double-arch grille, large L-shaped headlights with available Bi-Xenon Adaptive Front Lighting system, integrated fog lights, flared fender openings, distinctive LED taillights and its dynamic arch profile. Other exterior features include a high-mounted rear hatchback spoiler, chrome strip surrounding the greenhouse and lower doors, big chrome door handles, chrome-finished dual exhaust tips, an available power tilt-sliding sunroof with one-touch activation and optional roof rails and crossbars which extend its storage possibilities. A standard puddle lamp is integrated in the driver’s-side-view mirror as part of the hospitality light concept.

One of the unique features of the new EX35 is ‘Scratch Shield’, a special ‘self-healing’ clearcoat paint, which is designed to maintain it gloss-level over time. The paint repairs fine scratches such as fingernail scratches under door handles, restoring the EX35’s surface close to its original state. The process, which takes anywhere from one day to one week (depending on the surrounding temperature and the depth of the scratch), is accomplished through the use of a special highly elastic resin. This resin is combined with a conventional clearcoat to increase the paint’s flexibility and strength by raising the resin density.

Like all Infiniti vehicles, the EX35 was conceived to offer a reinvigorating and engaging interior environment, one that is both indulgent and inspiring.

Matching the exterior’s sculpted shapes is the driver-focused ‘wave-inspired’ cabin layout featuring an Infiniti signature ‘double-wave’ instrument panel, easy-to-read high-contrast gauges with white-and-violet illumination and hospitality lighting with a pin LED light mounted over the center console and Infiniti-signature analog clock.

The instrument panel also features a 7in. color display with Infiniti controller for the trip computer and additional vehicle information, including the available Infiniti Hard Disk based Navigation System with 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for music storage and playback.

Other technology systems include available Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System, standard Infiniti Intelligent key with push button start/stop, and XM Satellite Radio.

Available technology features include RearView Monitor (available separately, or as part of the Around View Monitor system), front and rear sonar system, Intelligent Cruise Control, and Bose Premium Audio System with Burr-Brown 24-bit DAC, 11-speakers including two subwoofers, 6-CD in-dash changer and iPod connectivity.

The comfortable interior is offered with cloth or leather-appointed seating surfaces. A special Black Lacquer trim comes standard on the center console and center stack, and door panels (replacing Black Lacquer and aluminum respectively). There is also a leather and aluminum shift knob, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls for audio, cruise-control, chrome, aluminum and real wood trim pieces, voice commands and Lane Departure Prevention (if equipped). Dual-zone automatic climate control is also available.

An 8-way power driver’s seat with 2-way manual lumbar support and a 4-way power passenger’s seat are standard. A driver’s seat memory system is also offered, along with available heated front seats and 8-way power front passenger seat, this option comes with an easy entry/exit function whereby the seat slides back when you shut it off and returns to its set position when you turn vehicle on. Also available is a 60/40 split power-folding 2nd row seat that is operated from the front or rear hatch area.

The only drawback inside is the less-than-comfortable rear seat legroom of 28.5in. which is OK for children but really not enough knee comfort for adults, unless, of course, you have the front seats pushed forward. Other than the short rear legroom, the interior is superb. Standard equipment inside not mentioned above includes auto dimming rearview mirror with compass, trip computer, overhead console with sunglass holder, front sun visors with dual illuminated vanity mirrors, grab handles above each door, power windows/door locks with front express up/down, front dual cupholders, center storage bin, rear folding armrest with dual cupholders, locking glove box with light, map pockets in doors and front seat backs, theater lighting, rear foot heater ducts, remote keyless entry, outside temperature display, 12-volt power point in ashtray, and thick-pile carpeting/front/rear floormats.

Under the EX35’s dramatic body is an equally advanced platform and powertrain based on the latest Infiniti performance technology. Its advanced FM (front/midship) platform provides the same high levels of handling precision and balance as it does for all Infiniti vehicles. The EX35’s rigid and torsional frame and chassis features corrosion resistant and high-strength steel, with aluminum hood, deck lid and door structures to lessen weight.

Every EX35 comes standard wit a fourth-generation VQ35HR 3.5 liter V6 engine rated at 296hp and 253lb.ft. of torque, that is mated to a smooth shifting 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, DS sport mode and Downshift Rev Matching, and Adaptive Shift Control to make your drive even more enjoyable and exciting. The aluminum engine block features ladder frame construction, variable exhaust cam timing, asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors and Iridium spark plugs. Its symmetric twin ram air intake system helps reduce airflow resistance, while the dual exhaust system has been designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and reduced muffler exhaust pressure that helps with engine breathing. Both are tuned to create authoritative harmonies, helping enhance driving pleasure, an exciting engine sound and expected improvements in emissions and fuel economy. This fourth-generation VQ engine design also includes continuously variable valve timing control system, a noiseless timing chain for quiet operation, an electronically controlled ‘drive-by-wire’ throttle system, micro-finished crank journals and cam lobes, and molybdenum coated lightweight pistons. The EX35’s tuning strategy features a refined balance of quick acceleration that builds continuously to the redline. It’s a deepening pleasure that keeps getting better as you drive.

Precise handling and a smooth ride is assured because every EX35 utilizes a subframe-mounted independent front double-wishbone suspension with aluminum-alloy upper and lower links, high-performance dual-flow pass shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with aluminum-alloy upper and lower links and axle housing, high-performance dual-flow pass shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. The coupe like response is enhanced with a vehicle speed-sensitive power-assisted rack & pinion steering system that gives instant response to your inputs at the wheel.

Keeping you on your chosen path is a standard Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control, while an advanced Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking is optional.
Quickly and safely slowing the EX35 down from speed are large, power-assisted, steel disc brakes. Up front are 12.6in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, and 12.1in. solid discs in the rear clamped with single-piston calipers. These powerful brakes are enhanced with standard ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist.

Available tire and wheel combinations include standard 17X7in. aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped with 225/60R17in. summer tires, or optional 18X8in. aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped with 225/55R18in. Dunlop high-performance summer tires.

The front engine/rear-wheel drive EX35 is also offered with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system. EX35 AWD models feature Infiniti’s ATTESA E-TS (advanced total traction engineering system for all electronic torque split) all-wheel drive system. The system utilizes an active torque distribution management system with an active center clutch designed for smooth starts and better traction and maneuverability on snowy roads than conventional all-wheel drive systems, plus minimal compromise of rear-wheel drive performance characteristics on dry roads. If you live in a cold climate I would suggest that the AWD system be ordered to increase traction and safety in adverse weather conditions.

The EX35’s advanced technology design is highlighted by two systems that are among the first production versions available that make driving and parking the EX35 easier and safer: the Infiniti Around View Monitor and the Lane Departure Prevention system.
The Around View Monitor utilizes small front, side and rear-mounted cameras to project an all-around view of potential objects on every side of the vehicle-helping reduce blind spots when parking. Conventional mirrors, no matter how carefully you use them, just can’t provide a view around the vehicle that the Around View Monitor’s four-camera system can. Rear bumper sonar sensors help detect objects behind a vehicle, but again can’t give the view of the space around the vehicle that the AVM does, it’s amazing!
The Lane Departure Prevention system builds on the Lane Departure Warning system that is currently available on the Infiniti FX. Rather than just use an audible/visual warning system to alert you of unintentional vehicle movement outside the designated lane, the LDP system uses the vehicle’s Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system to help assist you in maintaining lane position if the vehicle inadvertently starts to drift outside the lane.

Both LDP and LDW systems use a small camera installed behind the windshield to detect visible lane markers in front of the vehicle and calculate its position relative to lane markers and warn you of lane drift (pending lane change without the use of the turn signal), with a visual display and audible buzzer. At the same time, the LDP system assists you by using gentle control (generating part of the necessary yaw movement), using the VDC’s brake actuator to control the brake pressure of each individual wheel to generate the intended movement.

Infiniti has taken a leadership position in offering the first production Lane Departure Warning systems for production vehicles, and is poised to continue the development and refinement of this technology with the EX35’s Lane Departure Prevention system.

Every 2008 EX35 also features the Infiniti Advanced Airbag system with dual stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant classification system, driver and front passenger side-impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental airbags for front and rear seat outboard occupant head protection, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Also standard are 3-point seat belts, for all five seating positions and front pretentioners/load limiters with adjustable upper anchors, front seat active head restraints, and LATCH system for child seats in the rear. Also enhancing safety in the event of a collision is Infiniti’s advanced Zone Body Construction with front and rear crushable zones to help disperse crash energy around the passenger compartment.

The all-new 2008 EX35 is an extraordinary vehicle providing a personal reward to those who drive and own it. With power and agility available on demand, personal luxury offered inside like more expensive crossover vehicles, it’s a perfect fit for buyers looking to add a little excitement and versatility in their everyday lives. Base prices start at $34,500.00 all the way up $44,015.00 for the loaded rear-wheel drive model that I tested.

The all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 is a great addition to Nissan’s upscale Infiniti division.

It has chiseled good looks, a 330hp high-performance V6 engine, active four-wheel steering, fully independent four-wheel aluminum suspension, low restriction dual exhaust system, 14in. disc brakes riding on 19X9in. light alloy wheels wrapped with Bridgestone Pontenza tires. Inside you’ll find a sporty yet luxurious interior featuring all the latest in automotive high technology.

The G37 coupes’ advanced performance systems are wrapped in an all-new seductive skin, giving the vehicle a ‘kenetic’ feeling with emotional surface expression, sweeping character lines and tight panel gap lines. All body panels are made of corrosion-resistant high-strength steel with an aluminum hood.

The all-new G37 is longer, lower and wider than before. Exterior highlights include flowing front fender curves, a wave-style hood, expressive front fascia with Infiniti’s signature double-arch grille and L-shaped HID bi-xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps. The strong side character line and side sills integrate with the large flared wheel openings to accommodate the 18in. standard, and 19in. optional performance wheels and tires that transmit an added sense of power. The rear of the G37 features broad fenders flowing into the large LED taillights, a refined rear bumper, integrated Rear View monitor camera, when equipped, rear underbody air diffuser and large dual exhaust tips with chrome finishes. The available rear spoiler gives the G37 zero rear lift, matching the standard zero-lift front aerodynamics. The G37S is sleek and sexy standing still or in motion.

This powerhouse V6 engine is rated at 330hp and 270lb.ft. of torque. Along with utilizing a larger displacement than before, the G37 coupe’s new VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. The VVEL system is also expected to improve emissions and fuel economy. The VVEL intake camshafts, featuring continuously variable lift control teamed with the continuously variable valve timing control system to allow a high 7,500rpm redline. The engine also features increased cylinder block height, ladder frame construction for greater rigidity, large crank journals and pin diameters, asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors, an electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle system, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, Iridium spark plugs and a symmetric twin air intake system.A new specially tuned dual exhaust system was designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and low muffler exhaust backpressure to help improve engine breathing. Both intake and exhaust enhance driving pleasure with their authentic performance notes. This high-output V6 engine is mated to a choice of an upgraded electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, downshift rev matching, DS mode and ASC (adaptive shift control), that allows for quicker shifts in sport driving situations and available genuine magnesium paddle shifters. The standard revised, short-throw, lightweight 6-speed manual transmission is smooth and quick in operation. Either choice is easy to operate with power coming on strong, from low revs, right up to redline. It is a great feeling when just a little tap with your foot quickly pushes you back into your seat. With 330hp at your disposal for great acceleration, the unique suspension and steering only makes the ride and handling more fun, exciting and enjoyable.

Infiniti used the famed Nurburgring German racetrack to tune the unique suspension and give it both a comfortable ride with superb sporty handling ability. The suspension features lightweight aluminum components and large front and rear stabilizer bars, increased spring rates and optimized dampers. The front suspension is a double-wishbone design with a single pivot lower wishbone and a long upper link. The multi-link rear suspension separates the shock absorbers and springs, locating the shocks inline with the wheel center. These designs help minimize alignment changes and reduce suspension friction for nimble handling and smooth ride characteristics.

Precise steering control is provided by a twin-orifice vehicle-speed-sensing design, which provides optimum steering effort at both high and low speeds. You’ll experience an excellent feel for the road and quick response to your inputs, just like a racecar.

Standard is the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) which assists in enhancing vehicle stability under a variety of driving conditions. Also available is Infiniti’s exclusive

4-Wheel Active Steer system (4WAS). With unique chassis configuration that features automatically variable front steering ratios and rear suspension geometry that adjusts to steering input and vehicle speed via motor-driven controls. The system’s electronic control unit calculates the desired vehicle dynamics from a series of sensors, including vehicle speed and steering angle, and separately directs both the front and rear actuators to change steering gear ratios and rear geometry by moving both front steering gear and rear suspension lower links-thus providing sports-car like agility and secure stability.

It really works as I felt as if I was driving a more expensive sports car or racecar. The G37S sticks to the road like you are on rails with no squealing noise from the tires as they perfectly meet the road surface.

Outstanding braking performance quickly and safely slows the new G37 down from speed. Standard are 4-wheel vented discs enhanced with 4-channel 4-sensor ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake-assist. The standard G37 comes with 13in. front and rear rotors clamped with twin-piston calipers up front, and single-piston calipers in the rear. The G37 coupe Journey Sport and 6-speed manual Sport includes 14in. front and 13.8in. rear discs clamped with 4-piston calipers in the front, and 13.8in rear discs clamped with dual-piston calipers. Both front calipers are embossed with Infiniti lettering.

Working with the brake systems is Infiniti’s optional Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) with Preview Braking, which provides a precise following distance from the vehicle ahead. It also identifies sudden braking situations with laser sensors to determine distance and relative speed of the vehicle ahead in the same lane and ‘pre-pressurizes’ the brake assist system before you step on the brake pedal. You can determine the brake distance of the traffic ahead, then you click in the speed that you want to go from the steering wheel mounted buttons.

A new 18in. wheel and tires package is standard and features 18X8in. split, 5-spoke, aluminum-alloy wheel design with 227/50VR18in. all-season radial tires. The new optional 10-spoke 19X8.5in. lightweight cast aluminum wheels are wrapped with Bridgestone Pontenza 225/45R19in. front, and 245/40R19in. rear tires that really grip the pavement and also give a very compliant ride over poorly paved surfaces. The optional limited slip differential also enhances getting all the power and torque to the pavement for increased acceleration. The all-new G37S rockets out to 60mph from a standstill in just 5.0sec. The rocket-sled acceleration and razor-sharp handling ability are on par with sport coupes costing thousands of dollars more. I enjoyed every minute that I spent behind the wheel of the G37S.

Infiniti designers and engineers also worked on upgrading the interior to make it even more fun and enjoyable to drive. The sophisticated craftsmanship with cockpit-oriented driver and passenger area features Infiniti’s signature ‘double-wave’ instrument panel design features the Infiniti-signature analog clock and dramatic, full-length center console with a leather and aluminum-clad shifter. Special aluminum-alloy interior trim, inspired by elegant, handsome Japanese Washi paper, is located across the instrument panel, on the center console and on the door panels. Genuine Aftrican Rosewood trim is also available.

The instrument cluster features Infiniti’s electroluminescent instrumentation with white-and-violet illumination and integrated multi-function information driver computer showing average fuel consumption, real-time fuel economy, average speed, elapsed time, odometer and automatic transmission shift indicator display.

You grip a sporty, 3-spoke, double-hand-stitched, leather covered steering wheel that tilt and telescopes for the perfect angle. Available are genuine magnesium paddle shifter for the 5-speed automatic that are real easy to use.

The very comfortable 8-way power driver and 4-way passenger seats are appointed with Infiniti’s exclusive premium leather and feature 2-way adjustable head restraints and a unique rear-seat access system that with a push of a button moves the seat forward to allow easy access to the rear seats. The G37 Journey with Sport Package and G37 Sport with the 6-speed manual add special 14-way sport-styled bucket seats that are deeply bolstered including thigh extensions and power adjustable torso and thigh bolsters for the driver, unique steering wheel stitching and high-grip aluminum foot pedals.

Technological and convenience features abound in the new G37 including push button start/stop, remote keyless entry, an illuminated glove box, automatic dual climate control system with air filtration, cruise-control, 6-speaker AM-FM-CD audio system with MP3 playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS), center console with dual cupholders and deep storage bin with leather top center including an auxiliary input, as well as a 7in. color display, express up/down power windows/door locks, overhead console with dual map lamps/sunglass storage, trunk release button, rear window defroster, and front/rear carpeted floor mats.
Although flying cars aren’t yet a reality, automakers are continually developing new technologies to make our cars safer and more futuristic. Here are some of our favorite automotive features from 2007 that edge us ever-closer to a car George Jetson would be proud of. Features from a number of cars made our list, but the 2008 Infiniti EX35 received the most mentions, including the top spot with our favorite new feature, Lane Departure Prevention.

Best New Feature: Lane Departure Prevention

Where you can find it: Infiniti EX35

Infiniti’s Lane Departure Prevention builds on conventional lane-departure warning systems, which detect lane markings and sound a chime if you drift astray. LDP goes one step further by gently applying the brakes to certain wheels to nudge you back on course. Sound too intrusive? We tried it out in the EX35 and it keeps a remarkably low profile. Hit the turn signal or steer the wheel slightly, and the system deactivates. On straight roads, it intervenes with just a hint of deceleration, and the dashboard chime alerts you of its actions. For its effectiveness and low profile, LDP is the winner.

Scratch Shield Paint

Where you can find it: Infiniti EX35

The crusade for city-friendly transportation began years ago with plastic bumpers and dent-resistant doors. It reaches new heights with Infiniti’s Scratch Shield paint. On the EX35, Scratch Shield combines a highly elastic resin with the clearcoat finish. The resulting surface is said to maintain a glossy appearance over the years, and it can actually undo minor damage in the course of a few days. While Scratch Shield won’t repair dents or gashes, Infiniti says it can restore things like fingernail scratches under the door handles. We haven’t had a chance to see it in action, but we’re intrigued by the prospects.

Around View Monitor

Where you can find it: Infiniti EX35

Let’s be clear on one thing: Infiniti’s Around View Monitor ain’t pretty. With cameras mounted on each side of the car, its fish-eye, top-down view distorts any three-dimensional object nearby. But is it effective? You bet. With a 360-degree view of exactly what’s around your car, it reduces getting into narrow parking spots and crowded alleys to a science. Even the best front-and-rear sonar systems can’t replicate this. You have to see it — and park it — to believe it.

Full-Size Hybrid SUVs/Trucks

Where you can find it: Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Durango, GMC Yukon

To date, hybrid technology has graced only compact and midsize SUVs. Sharing a new 2-Mode Hybrid system, several GM and Chrysler Group full-size SUV models and a pickup truck deliver significant mileage gains — if early estimates prove accurate. Some environmentalists cry heresy over this development, but we can’t see how fuel economy improvement in the vehicles that need it most could be a bad thing. The trucks give up almost none of their hauling and towing capabilities, remaining useful to the people who really need them and would buy full-size anyway, hybrid or not.

Integrated Booster Seats

Where you can find it: Volvo V70, Volvo XC70

This is one of those simple features that make so much sense you wonder why they’re not present on more cars. In the new V70, the cushions of the outboard rear seats can easily be raised to one of two levels to better accommodate children, which means no more fumbling around with an aftermarket booster seat. What’s more, Volvo says the side curtain airbags in the V70 extend lower, which in conjunction with the raised seating position gives a child’s head greater protection in a side-impact collision.

Heartbeat Sensor

Where you can find it: Volvo S80

We’re dubious about the usefulness of a heartbeat sensor, but we were won over by the fact that such a futuristic feature is available in today’s cars. The heartbeat sensor, which Volvo says can help you determine if someone is lying in wait inside your car, is part of the S80 sedan’s Personal Car Communicator fob that can also do other things, like tell you if your car is locked or unlocked up to about 300 feet away.

Easy Third-Row Access

Where you can find it: Hyundai Veracruz

Getting into the third row in SUVs has gotten progressively easier in recent years, but the Veracruz has a three-step system that outshines the competition. Each part individually doesn’t seem like much, but put all together it’s a wonder no one else has thought of it. First, there’s a one-hand release latch that moves the second-row seat up, sliding it forward on rails. Secondly, there’s a cubbyhole tucked inside the Veracruz wall, right where little ones will need it to help themselves into the car. Finally, the second-row seats come with a handle that lets third-row occupants pull the seats back toward them, helping kids trying to get into the second row. Simple ideas, but great implementation.

Sirius Satellite TV

Where you can find it: Chrysler minivans

Any parent can tell you that one of the big drags about taking kids on long trips is all the stuff you’ve got to carry with you. Chrysler’s new Sirius Satellite TV makes this a bit easier by removing your DVD collection from the list. Your kids can watch one of three channels (the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network) on one or both of the rear swing-down screens; if it’s just one, the other can show a DVD or video game. Given these three channels offer programming that can satisfy kids from infancy through their teen years, this is a big step forward.

Sync Hands-Free System

Where you can find it: Various Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models

Ford has addressed driver distraction with a voice activation system that takes the fumbling out of using cell phones and digital music players. Sync allows drivers to control Bluetooth phones and MP3 players and storage devices that have a USB input using simple voice commands — it even reads text messages from compatible phones. Sync is standard on most uplevel trims in a dozen Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models; it’s a $395 option on base trim levels. That’s a lot of tech for not a lot of dough.

Volvo Blind Spot Information System

Where you can find it: C30, S40, S80, V50, V70, XC70, XC90

Volvo prides itself on safety innovations, and this is the latest. The new S80, V70 and XC70 have an optional blind spot information system that alerts drivers to cars that are hard to spot using mirrors. Two cameras are attached to the side mirrors, and a pale orange light illuminates whenever changing lanes would lead to hitting someone in the dreaded blind spot. A single button turns the system on and off if you’re in heavy traffic, but the faded hue of the lights doesn’t distract from driving. It’s a clever heads-up for the safety conscious.

We’ve found that cars with gas mileage monitors give us two games to play: Figuring out the best mileage we can squeeze out of the car, and figuring out the worst mileage we can get. While the latter is more fun, Nissan is hoping you’ll play the gas-saving game with its announcement today that all future models will include a fuel-efficiency gauge as standard equipment.

The gauge will display instant, as well as average, mileage readings to give drivers an idea of how their driving habits affect their gas mileage. Nissan reports the gauge could lead to driving improvements such as smoother acceleration and braking, increasing mileage by as much as 10 percent. Of course, that assumes that drivers will pay enough attention to the gauge, and to their own driving habits.

The gauge will find its way into current models scheduled for minor production freshenings, including the Nissan Altima and Infiniti G35, the automaker said.

To use M or to not use M?

Will your new BMW M3 be called a BMW 360i? Or will Infiniti have to find a new letter for the M35 and M45? Hm, well, not really.

Ill take the letter “M” Pat for one million dollars!

The Federal Court of Appeal in Canada has ruled that Nissan is free to use the letter “M” when promoting its Infiniti M35 and M45 product range, in a two-year court case where BMW Canada has accused Nissan Canada Inc. of trademark infringement. Earlier this year BMW won an injuction that would prevent Nissan from using the “M” letter, but this was overturned on appeal on July 12.

When Infiniti originally unveiled the “M35″ and “M45″ models BMW expressed no objection. Only when Nissan Canada launched an advertising campaign announcing “the M is coming” did BMW executives raise some eyebrows and decided to take legal action.

BMW will now have to either petition the Supreme Court to hear the case or alternatively come to an agreement with Nissan, BMW spokesman Jochen Frey said on August 7.

Nissan has upped the 3.5L to a 3.7L in the new Infiniti G35’s version of it’s new coupe called the G37. It puts out 330hp and will have… ready…?… a 4 wheel steering version of the new coupe. We shall see how long this one will last! A new re-designed touch screen navigation system will be optional as well. Shall we see something like this from Toyota. Look for our next few posts on Toyota’s new “sports” car.
