Want to keep your car ‘till death do you part? Buy from Chrysler and you can, with a new lifetime warranty on Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles.

The plan extends the manufacturer’s previous three-year, 36,000-mile powertrain warranty to last the vehicle’s lifetime—that’s right, forever. Should anything ever go wrong with the engine or drivetrain, Chrysler will pay for all the parts and labor needed to fix it.

But forever does have a few catches. The lifetime warranty only applies to the initial owner of the car and can’t be transferred, nor does it apply to high-performance SRT or fuel-sipping diesel vehicles. Plus, to keep the warranty current, a dealership must inspect the car every five years of the car’s life.

Chrysler says the warranty “provides worry-free ownership,” but it also shows the automaker’s apparent confidence in their product reliability.

A “lifetime” warranty may seem like a long commitment but Kia, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi all already offer ten-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranties. The Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty only exceeds that if the first owner keeps their Chrysler for over 100,000 miles. For customers who sell their cars after fewer than three years or 36,000 miles, the new warranty offers no benefits.
